Congregational Financing 1943-1958.

This series consists of records pertaining to arrangements made with mission congregations who were borrowing money from the Women's Missionary Society/United Lutheran Church Women (WMS/ULCW). The records are from 1943-1958. All or a portion of the borrowed funds were provided by the society, but all arrangements were made through the Division of Church Extension (DCE) and later the Board of American Missions (BAM) of the United Lutheran Church in America. Records include copies of pertinent correspondence between the individual congregations and DCE or BAM regarding the issuance of the mortgage, copies of correspondence between the lending institutions and the individual congregations, correspondence between the WMS/ULCW and individual congregations, and correspondence between the WMS/ULCW and BAM or DCE. In addition to correspondence there are the original copies of insurance policies that, in accordance with the mortgages, were kept with the WMS/ULCW, copies of quarterly reports of mission congregations, and copies of congregational or synodical resolutions pertaining to their requests for financing. The mortgage papers were kept in the possession of BAM with the stipulation that any officer of the WMS/ULCW could have access to the papers at any time. Not all the congregational files include the same type of record. Some of the photocopies have print that is difficult to read, but the records are in good condition. They are arranged alphabetically by the state in which the church was located.
